I have always been cynical about the issue of 'aid' even though I work in development advocacy. Here, a journalist examines the dilemma caused by food aid to Haiti in the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake which did massive damage to already fragile physical and political infrastructures, killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.
This documentary clearly shows that disaster aid can sometimes do more harm than good. In the case of Haiti, the influx of free rice brought in to feed hungry Haitians, put local retailers and vendors of the product out of business and disrupted a delicate balance of food security, something which the largely impoverished country already had only a very tenacious grip on.
